In one line
ShopFair is a free UK app that gives any brand an ethical score out of 100 and shows you who really owns it.
In a paragraph
ShopFair is your independent guide to ethical spending. Completely free, with no ads or subscriptions. Type a brand and see its ethical score out of 100, who owns it, and badges like Vegan, Cruelty-Free, Fairtrade and Organic. ShopFair covers thousands of brands across hundreds of categories, from supermarkets and fashion to banks and energy.
Why it exists
"I try to shop as ethically as I can, but I found the information can be difficult and time consuming to find. I built ShopFair with this in mind to help people like me shop in line with their values."
ShopFair is built by one person, independently.
What it does
Every brand scored. Every brand gets a score out of 100. Green is strong, amber is mixed, red is weak. Each score is built from evidence across the environment, workers, tax, animal welfare and transparency, and you can read the full breakdown on every page. The database is live so new brands and score changes reach the app automatically, with no update needed.
See who owns it. A lot of brands are owned by larger parent companies. ShopFair shows you who owns each brand, how the owner scores, and labels active boycott campaigns.
Scan a barcode to be instantly taken to the brand's page. If the brand you scanned isn't covered, you can help grow the database by sending it in one tap.
Scan a receipt for a full report on every item, with smart swaps to help improve your score.
Matches your values. Pick your values, such as animal welfare and workers' rights, and ShopFair flags brands that match them throughout the app.
Compare brands. Add up to three brands and see their scores and breakdowns side by side, with the best pick highlighted.
Guides built in. Short guides to check before you buy, bin or switch, from what recycling symbols mean to spotting greenwashing and more.
Apple Watch, widgets and search. ShopFair runs on Apple Watch, with the full database searchable from your wrist. Add widgets to your home screen and lock screen, and find brand scores right in iOS search.
Free, private and independent. Free forever, with no ads or subscriptions. Your profile stays on your device, and nothing is uploaded or sold. Scores are ShopFair's own independent assessment, and every page has a report button if you spot something wrong.
Accessibility. ShopFair supports VoiceOver, larger text sizes, dark mode and reduced motion, and every score is shown as a number and a rating, never colour alone.
Kept current
Brands are re-checked regularly against published sources, and certifications are re-checked against the certifiers' own registries, since certificates lapse. Changes are published in the app under Database changes, and reach phones the same day without an app update.
Anyone can add a brand
Search or scan something ShopFair doesn't cover and the app will offer to send it for submission. Requests are researched and scored like anything else: of the 55 brands added in the first five days of August, 22 came from somebody asking.
The numbers
- More than 4,200 brands, each with its own score and full breakdown
- 138 categories, from supermarkets and fashion to banks, energy and telecoms
- 305 parent companies profiled and scored in their own right
- Free, with no adverts, no subscription and no account
- iPhone, plus a web app at shopfair.uk/app that runs in a browser with nothing to install
- Android is on the way
Diet and certification labels
Useful if you are writing for a vegan, vegetarian or cruelty-free readership:
- 698 brands marked vegan, and 306 marked vegetarian
- 638 brands marked cruelty-free, split by whether the claim is certified by Leaping Bunny or PETA or is the brand's own statement, which the app says on the page
- 222 organic, 187 B Corp, 48 Fairtrade
Where the evidence comes from
The pillars are weighted by sector: cosmetics carry a heavier animal-welfare weight than a bank, and a tech company is scored on data privacy instead. The weights sum to 100 and the breakdown is on every page.
Sources are published ones: Ethical Consumer, certifier registries such as Leaping Bunny, PETA, B Corp, Fairtrade, the Soil Association and the Vegan Society, regulators, court filings and NGO reporting.
Worth knowing
- The scores are ShopFair's own assessment of published evidence. They are a starting point for a decision, not an audit or a certification.
- It is UK-focused, so ownership, availability and certification will differ elsewhere.
- Not every brand is in there yet. Where one is missing, or a product is scanned that has no verified rating, the app says so and shows what it does know. It does not invent a score.
Assets
App icon and screenshots are available on request, and the app itself is the fastest way to see it: the web app runs in a browser with nothing to install.
